I know we're already a week into August but I mention a few things I'm looking forward to this month...
Crackpot Palace by Jeffrey Ford - Ford is one of my favorite writers and his three previous story collections are all fantastic. I don't think I've read many of the stories collected here and I can't wait to sink my teeth into them. (8/14)
One Last Thing Before I Go by Jonathan Tropper - Tropper's last novel, This Is Where I Leave You, was one of my favorite books of the year back in 2010 and I have high hopes for this one as well. Tropper is funny and full of heart. (8/21)
Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend by Matthew Dicks - This novel is from the point of view of a child's imaginary friend and that concept is enough to make me want to read it. (8/21)
It Girl & The Atomics by Jamie S. Rich and Mike Norton - I was a big fan of Mike Allred's Madman Comics back in the 90s but I lost the thread with the series and its subsequent incarnations over the last decade. This series brings It Girl and some other Atomics to the fore while Madman and others are off in space. I'm a big fan of Mike Norton's clean cartooning and this sounds like a lot of fun. (8/8)
Childrens Hospital Season 4 - This isn't just straight-forward comedy. This show plays with the form of the sitcom, creating "classic" episodes that never existed, giving narrations ala Our Town, and so much more. Plus, it's funny as hell. (8/9)
Red Hook Summer - My days of seeing every Spike Lee movie are long past but the trailer for this had me intrigued and the presence of Clark Peters (Lester Freamon on The Wire) didn't hurt. (8/10)
Robot & Frank - A movie about an old man who gets a robot and decides to return to a life of crime...abetted by the robot. Perfect. (8/17)
Researching the Blues/Redd Kross - I've heard of this band but never really heard them, something I'm eager to change. Their sound is supposed to be a little power pop and a little garage rock with some other styles in the mix. (8/7 - today!)
A Thing Called Divine Fits/Divine Fits - A new group with Britt Daniel from Spoon and Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs sharing songwriting and vocal duties. I was already sold but after hearing the first two tracks I am super sold. (8/28)
