Sunday Shuffle #474/475

I'm ready to put this feature on hiatus for a while, but I didn't want to end on #474 for now, which means I'm bringing back the "double issue" for today. The previous one was on Dec. 18 of last year. Normally, I do 20 songs on these editions, but since it's going away for a while, let's bump it to 25 today. Why not? 1. Price Tag/Sleater-Kinney (17) - last played on 3/24/17 2. The Indie Queens Are Waiting/Dan Mangan (5) - last played on 5/26/15 3. Ain't That Enough/Teenage Fanclub (31) - last played on 7/30/17 4. Dead Smile/Matthew Sweet (6) - last played on 9/10/17 5. Don't Need You/Alejandro Escovedo (4) - last played on 6/30/13 6. Accidental Life/Teenage Fanclub (15) - last played on 11/24/17 10. The Good That Won't Come Out/Rilo Kiley (...

Sunday Shuffle #414

I'd started a non-Sunday Shuffle post a few days ago, deciding I should use June to get back to some actual content...but I gave up pretty quickly. I still have two weeks left of my teaching course and Grant graduates next weekend and I start swimming lessons tomorrow, so time isn't my friend right now. Add to that the fact I'm way behind my book pace for the year and I still have a bunch of TV shows to catch up on and podcasts galore, so I'm not really up on things to write about either. Maybe in a couple of weeks I'll be ready to go. Until then, you'll get some more Sunday Shuffles. Here are today's ten... 1. Rude/Dinosaur Jr. (13) - last played on 6/4/16 2. Roscoe/Midlake (7) - last played on 3/12/15 3. History of Lovers//Iron And Wine/Calexico (6) - last played on 2/28/16 4. Everywhere/Ex Hex (18) - last played on 4/18/16 5. Step/Vampire Weekend (18) - last played on 4/26/15 6. Wonderful/Josh Rouse (5) - last played on 8/16/15 7. The Well and t...

Sunday Shuffle #396

It's a cold one here in NW Indiana, but I don't need to leave the house today. I'm also on day 3 of a 4-day weekend, which is also nice. Yes, I have schoolwork to do, but I also took time to watch the NFL playoffs yesterday (how about that Green Bay/Arizona game?) and will do so again today. Don't forget that you can listen along via Spotify every week...direct link to be posted this evening. And with that, here's today's ten... 1. Lost Coastlines/Okkervil River (6) - last played on 11/2/14 2. I Hate My Generation/Sloan (17) - last played on 4/18/15 3. Underwater Moonlight (Early Version)/The Soft Boys (5) - last played on 5/3/15 4. What New York Used To Be/The Kills (7) - last played on 12/31/12 5. Everywhere/Ex Hex (13) - last played on 1/10/16 6. King Of The World/First Aid Kit (9) - last played on 3/14/15 7. Well, You Can Do It Without Me/Father John Misty (14) - last played on 6/7/15 8. Faster Days/Velvet Crush (12) - last played on 1/18/15 9. S...

Heavy Rotation #24

It's been well over a year since the last Heavy Rotation but I've been hitting these albums pretty hard over the past couple weeks, so it's time for a new installment... Ryan Adams & The Cardinals/Cold Roses - I think I've mentioned by big Ryan Adams listen last fall in the run-up to his great self-titled release. I'd been a fan in the early 2000s and then lost touch due to the sheer volume of music he put out. Out of all the albums that were new to me, Cold Roses made the biggest impression. It's a double album and while that can sometimes lead to bloat, I've always admired the ambition of doing one (and I don't think there's bloat in this case). "Magnolia Mountain," a perfect shambling rocker, opens the album and it's followed by the more melancholy "Sweet Illusions"; a great 1-2 punch. Later on the first disc, I love the repeated "I could never close/I could never get close enough/I could never get close enough....

Music 2014

I listen to most of my music via Spotify these days, though I will buy mp3 albums when the price is decent and I have some spare cash. That means I'm able to listen to way more albums than I used to and I'm able to try new artists that I never would have gotten around to in the old days. There was a lot of great music in 2014 and here are 10 albums that I loved... 1. Spoon/They Want My Soul - This is Spoon's sixth straight fantastic album and might actually be my favorite. That's hard to do 8 albums into a career. I don't know if the 4 years off the band had in between albums or if maybe Britt Daniel's time in Divine Fits contributed to the greatness of these 10 songs but something did. From the opening rock of "Rent I Pay" to the spacey, synth sound of "Inside Out" to the sunny sounding "Do You" to the whistling on "Knock Knock Knock," there is so much to be found here. In fact, I'm playing this album while I write...
